Description

As highlighted at the Concrete BC 2024 Convention and AGM, Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs, are becoming an increasingly important form of documentation for concrete producers and are fast becoming a requirement for supplying select project specifications across Canada, in addition to several municipal, provincial, or federal regulations under development.

EPDs act as a nutrition label for construction materials, denoting the environmental impact on a per weight or volume basis across a range of impact categories, including, most notably, Global Warming Potential (GWP) or carbon intensity. While Concrete BC has developed industry average EPD data for its members, the call for product and facility specific EPDs is growing, which requires concrete producers to undergo a thorough data gathering exercise that can take up to six months to complete.

To ensure concrete producers are not caught off guard by local projects that may soon require an EPD, Concrete BC is advising its members to learn more about EPDs and consider undertaking the process of developing EPDs at their facilities.

To help facilitate this, Concrete BC produced the following video to explain why EPDs are important and the information required for Producers to generate their own.

However, Producers are going to respond to demand, so as part of this exercise, Concrete BC has been promoting the adoption and use of Type III EPDs by Specifiers. Concrete BC has hosting a series of Lunch and Learns Seminars and Concrete BC also produced the following video to explain why EPDs are important and what information Specifiers need to know about:
