To ensure a safer and more successful pour when using a concrete pump on the job, determined collaboration from the entire team is essential. In this session, you’ll learn how to prepare, what to expect, and most importantly, how to identify potential hazards that can lead to an unfortunate, often avoidable, accident. Specific topics include:
- Pre-pour planning – size and type of placing equipment, special needs
- Site preparation for placement and ready mixed access
- Communication – hand signals, spotter responsibilities
- Mix designs – ensuring a pumpable mix
- Hazards such as entrapped air, power lines, and tipping
- What you should expect from your concrete pumper

Gary has over 45 years of service in the concrete pumping industry and has been with R.L. McCoy, Inc. – a prominent concrete contractor specializing in bridge construction - for 30 of those years expanding their concrete pumping division. Gary retired from the Indiana Army National Guard and attended Purdue University. He is a board member of the American Concrete Pumping Association and chair of the Safety Training and Certification Committee. Gary received an ACPA Pioneer Award in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
